What have I learned in 2005?

I’m not sure if this is going to be my last post on Dangerous Thinking this year, but I must get this one down before it becomes 2006.

Here are the top three issues to have come up this year, issues that should be paid attention to by everyone who does business on the Net.

1. Businesses must be researched properly with respect to the Net - don’t assume that being successful on the Internet is cheap (OK, there is a balance between spending budget and the team’s time, but either approach costs in one way or another). You’ll need a proper marketing plan and budget, because your hardest competitors will have made the investment.

Because marketing your business on the Net is going to require investment, you’ll need to be sure it’s viable in that competitive environment. If you can’t do the research in-house, for god’s sake spend the money on someone you can! We’ve seen more than one online business this year that didn’t launch (thankfully), but the directors had already spent too much time and money before they looked at the realities of doing business online.

2. One product is rarely enough - unless you have a high margin and/or price, or a very low cost base, one product doesn’t often make a successful business.

3. Work with more than one search engine - aim for high positions on all the major search engines to reduce your vulnerability to algorithm changes. And don’t rely on a single SEO tactic for your results.
