Flooding to the east and west of here

January 3rd, 2003 David Rosam No comments

Flood threat remains as rain continues. Further rain is forecast for the UK on Friday morning, bringing with it the threat of further flooding across large areas. [BBC News | Front Page | UK Edition]

But so far, nothing too close to us in Worthing.

You’ll know when the floods get bad, because I’ll tell you when they reach our front door – we live on the first floor (that’s second floor if you’re reading in the States, or anywhere else that doesn’t have a ground floor). :-)

Fears for Brighton pier after collapse. Safety officials are concerned that more of Brighton’s historic West Pier will collapse, after a walkway fell into the sea. [BBC News | Front Page | UK Edition]

But:

“This doesn’t affect the plans [to restore the pier] and it doesn’t affect the funding and I don’t think it will affect our finances that much.

“It is sad to see the old lady damaged in a way, but in terms of the restoration plans it is not crucial.”

Brighton’s West Pier collapses

Brighton pier collapses. A large part of the West Pier in Brighton collapses into the sea. [BBC News | Front Page | UK Edition]

Brighton is just 12 miles east of where I sit now, and it’s very sad news as reconstruction had just begun after storm damage back in the 70s. Now what’s going to happen?

I wonder if this had anything to do with the helicopter and lifeboats earlier? They were actually out about an hour before the BBC reports the pier fell into the sea, so I guess both events are probably down to bad weather overnight.
